Domenicus Verwilt was called to Sweden to help create the trappings of royal grandeur. This portrait of the 28-year-old Erik XIV is in keeping with contemporary European ideals, with a costume in a modern style, sumptuous fabrics and jewels. He belonged to the second generation of Vasa kings on the Swedish throne and was the first to receive a princely education. Erik was well aware of how art could be used in the service of royal power.
