Henry Clay Pierce was an American oil baron and one of the country’s wealthiest people at the time. Zorn was commissioned to paint his portrait but he claimed that the entire process was distasteful in that he had to stay at Pierce’s residence and paint a posthumous portrait of Pierce’s dead wife. Pierce was dissatisfied with the result and asked Zorn to make changes. No changes were actually made and Pierce ultimately paid Zorn after some pressure.
