An aristocratic young woman is getting dressed for the day – a fashionable and elaborate ritual called the morning toilette. The painting is full of detail: the woman is dressed in a powder cape while a male servant adjusts her wig, and two women hold up silk dresses and rosettes for her to choose from. Hilleström was inspired by artists such as the Frenchmen François Boucher and Jean Siméon Chardin in these depictions of everyday life.
