In the kitchen of a magnificent palace, women are preparing a feast. A sumptuous still life of realistically rendered poultry, game and joints of lamb conveys an image of prosperity. The scene also contains a number of erotic allusions. In the background we see Jesus’ encounter with Martha and Mary. Is this a warning against excess in the good things in life, at the expense of spiritual values? It could also be a social satire on the simple habits and uninhibited sexuality of the lower classes.
