Karl XII was famous throughout Europe. Everyone wanted his portrait, but the king was reluctant to sit for his likeness. He finally agreed to let Johan David Swartz paint this portrait in the camp at Altranstädt, Germany. For a royal portrait, it is unusual not to flatter or idealize the model. After the painting arrived in Stockholm, it was copied many times. By then, Karl XII's family had not seen him for seven years.
