During the 1660s Rosa showed a fascination with history and myth in which magic and mystery co-existed with experimental science. His rocky landscapes grow darker and more threatening and are filled with strange figures and peculiar elemental beings. He paints almost monochrome landscapes that introduce a new and disturbing psychological intensity. In this dramatic work, Jason drops poison that he was given by Medea onto the dragon that is guarding the golden fleece.
