In this consciously historicising portrait, the artist Ernst Billgren has provided the historian and Swedish Academy member Erik Lönnroth with a model of Kalmar Castle, recalling his much-discussed thesis on Sweden and the Kalmar Union, from 1934. Lönnroth was one of the leading historians and intellectuals of 20th-century Sweden. In his writing, he continued up to the very end to challenge prejudice and ingrained patterns of thought.
