    This double portrait was begun in the late 1790s as a commission for Gustav IV Adolf. In his hand the king holds a blank document, probably intended to tell of his achievements as monarch. Queen Fredrika wears a miniature, but with a similarly empty frame. The unfinished state of the painting probably has to do with the royal couple’s exile. The painting remained in Forsslund’s studio and was bought by Oscar I from his heirs in 1856.
