Colin Campbell, a Scot, was one of the founders of Sweden’s East India Company in 1731. He sailed on the maiden voyage to China in 1732 as the company’s first supercargo and also acted as the Swedish king’s official envoy to the Chinese Emperor. Although beset with problems, the voyage was a financial success. On his return Campbell was appointed Commercial Counsellor by Fredrik I. Here the 70-year-old Campbell is wearing the king’s portrait.
