Alexander Roslin was born in Sweden, but mostly worked in Paris. His skill and reputation took him back to Stockholm and to Saint Petersburg and painting commissions for the courts. The Moldovan princess Zoie Ghika lived as a refugee in Russia, and Roslin seems to have chosen to portray her in an unusually natural way, without the coiffures and makeup that is usually associated with the 18th century.
