Sandberg has painted Valkyries rushing down onto the battlefield to carry dead warriors to the gods. A study for the painting (on your left) was exhibited in Stockholm in 1818. One critic wrote: “The disposition of this masterpiece is grand, the whole painting is highly poetic, the characters are beautifully portrayed, the horses full of fire. […] Such a painting, together with Mr. Fogelberg’s statues, are already, in themselves, a guarantee for the future existence and fulfilment of Nordic art.”
