A man and a woman are seen next to a laid table. Behind them is a city view with a statue interpreted as Luther, which can be linked to Valckenborch’s escape from religious persecution in Flanders. A restoration has shown that the glass that the man is holding is an hourglass that was painted over. Perhaps it is a self-portrait of Valckenborch with a reminder of the transience of life. The painting was finished by his partner Flegel.
