Nearly all of Gaspard Dughet’s paintings were landscapes, and he sometimes collaborated with other artists who painted the human figures. Although he lived his entire life in Italy and never visited France, he is usually regarded as French. In several paintings, Dughet has portrayed shepherds caught unawares by storms in mountainous terrain. The motif gave him a reason to depict dramatic atmospheric effects and people moving rapidly.
