The girl carrying a basket on her head seems to be on her way to the market with apples and artichokes. She appears against a black background; it is the girl herself that is important. The almost monumental representation of a servant girl or peasant woman is unusual in French 17th century painting. The work is not signed, and since there are few comparisons, it has not been possible to accurately associate the painting with any artist.
