Gilbert Stuart was born in Rhode Island when it was a British colony. He became the young American nation’s most prominent portraitist. Despite his slow working method he was very productive. Several of his works are unfinished, including his most famous one of George Washington. His portraits show empathy and insightful acuity. Stuart also worked in Scotland and England, where he executed the painting of Mrs Blades and her daughter.
