Wertmüller depicts Adélaïde Auguié as a dairymaid in the royal dairy at Petit Trianon-Le Hameau. Model farming, including sheep-breeding, was part of the fashion for English gardens that inspired the French royal couple. Adélaïde Auguié was lady-in-waiting to Queen Marie-Antoinette and stayed in her service until the monarchy was overthrown.
