Wertmüller depicts Adélaïde Auguié as a dairymaid in the royal pleasure dairy at Petit Trianon-Le Hameau. Model farming, including sheep-breeding, was part of the fashion for English gardens that the French royals followed. Adélaïde Auguié was lady-in-waiting to Queen Marie-Antoinette and stayed in her service until the monarchy was overthrown. She killed herself on 26 July 1794, the day before the Reign of Terror ended.
