Elias Erdtman’s small painting shows Hôtel Laurent, one of the places where artists could stay on their visits to Grez-sur-Loing. The building and its garden are painted in bright daylight. The scene recurs in a remarkable number of paintings of the region by Swedish artists. Elias Erdtman was at the artist colony in Grez in 1886 – at the same time as Carl Larsson, Karl Nordström and August Strindberg.
