In 1889, Swedish-Canadian artist couple Carolina Benedicks and William Blair Bruce moved into the pink pavilion at Hôtel Chevillon in Grez, where Karin and Carl Larsson also had stayed as newlyweds. In this painting, Bruce has depicted his wife sitting at the etching screen on the veranda, absorbed in her work. The couple’s artistic union is interwoven with family life, symbolised by the abandoned breakfast table in the foreground.
