Bruno Liljefors’ depictions of animals are rarely idealised. Animals are shown as animals, not as bearers of human characteristics. The pictures are neither anecdotal nor moralising. This hunting image shows that Liljefors was inspired by contemporaneous French naturalistic painting, where nature was depicted without being beautified, and where the overall effect is like that of snapshot photography. The picture’s subject, which almost lacks a horizon, is also typical.
