In Christian Krohg’s Man Overboard, the viewer is confronted by a terrible scene. A sailor has just fallen into the towering waves and his chances of being rescued seem small. All we can see is the tormented movement of the bluish-green water and its great force. The painting is realistic but affects us at a deeply emotional level in depicting a situation that most can identify with and conceive of as one of the worst possible.
