Mary Magdalene’s penitence was a popular theme in Italian painting during the Catholic Counter-Reformation. The former prostitute symbolised the possibility of salvation through the sacrament of confession. Full of remorse for her sinful ways, she raises her tear-filled eyes heavenwards. The life-like image of the saint’s weeping face expresses her spiritual transformation. Dolci was known for meticulously finished, intensely religious images.
