Vänner depicts the Junta society, which gathered at the home of Hanna and Georg Pauli in Södermalm, Stockholm. Its members belonged to Sweden’s cultural elites and were artists, writers, collectors, actors and publishers. At the centre, in the lamplight, Ellen Key reads aloud. She was a famous, but controversial, intellectual whose ideas about marriage, childrearing, education and peace shaped opinion around 1900.
