Ernst Josephson had high expectations of himself: he wanted to become Sweden’s Rembrandt and therefore travelled to France and the Netherlands to study. As well as painting, he also published poetry. Marie-Louise-Catherine Breslau, a very popular portraitist in Paris, shows the young Josephson with red cheeks, a cigarette between his fingers and a drink on the table – almost the archetype of the happy-go-lucky artist.
