Nicolas Lancret’s painting with its winter motif matched the desires of Carl Gustaf Tessin, who had commissioned it. Tessin and his wife were passionate skaters but the motif also has amorous undertones. The focus of the man’s gaze and the act of tying on the skates suggest this. The large dimensions of this work make it exceptional in Lancret’s oeuvre.
