The work was commissioned directly from the artist on Crown Princess Lovisa Ulrika’s account. She was closely involved through her representative Carl Gustaf Tessin, but Chardin chose the motif. He exhibited the painting at the Paris Salon in 1747. The work has been much admired through the centuries, in particular for its detailed depiction of an everyday setting and the woman who seems to be deliberating calmly and thoughtfully on what she reads.
