A number of winged children, putti, are picking apples to honour Venus, the goddess of love, depicted as a statue. Next to her are two nymphs, female nature spirits. This is a freestanding copy of a painting by the Renaissance master Tizian (in the Prado museum of Madrid), which Rubens admired. But Rubens’ version has more life and movement and is painted in warmer tones. The entire picture is like a sparkling tribute to love.
