This picture of a woman in half-length is not a commissioned portrait but rather a so-called tronie, the image of an intriguing individual, often, as here, in fanciful costume. The pleated white shirt reflects 16th-century fashion, while the gold-embroidered cape seems to stem from the artist’s imagination. Such images were popular collector’s items showing the artist’s power of invention and execution.
