Lemoine is regarded as one of the foremost French miniaturists of the later 18th century. His works marry a sizeable measure of artistic freedom to technical precision, as is evident in this self-portrait. The brushwork is clearly visible, the colours warm. The painting belonged to the artist’s heirs until Nationalmuseum was able to acquire it in Paris.
