Sophie Adlersparre was admittedly a member of the nobility and a county governor’s daughter, but any woman wanting to become an artist in Sweden in the first half of the 19th century faced significant limitations. Adlersparre first became a private pupil of Johan Gustaf Sandberg and Olof Johan Södermark. She later studied at Léon Cogniet’s studio for women in Paris. This is a variant of her self-portrait at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts.
