In 1943, Siri Derkert came to the Fogelstad Women’s Civic College in Julita, where she made portraits of its leading lights. In this one, of the principal Honorine Hermelin, she returned to a technique she had tried back in the 1920s, miniature painting. Derkert has captured the sitter’s eyes with great expressiveness. She showed here that this art form would have had a future, if its practitioners had exploited the luminosity of ivory and abandoned their dependence on photography.
