The character of the sitter – not of the artist – is the primary concern of a portrait, William Fleet- wood believed. This one is imbued with the Purism which Otto G. Carlsund presented at the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930. Signed a few years after Carlsund’s death, the painting can be seen as a tribute to his lifelong endeavour to introduce ultramodern art. Fleetwood has incorporated his fellow artist’s name in the intersecting geometrical shapes of the background.
