This portrait is one in a series representing children of the Empress Maria Theresa. It depicts the teenage Archduchess Maria Antonia, not yet queen of France. The artist, Joseph Hickel, studied in Vienna, where one of his teachers was the Swedish-born Martin van Meytens. Hickel was later appointed imperial chamber painter and mainly produced portraits. In addition to his own work, he restored paintings in the imperial collections.
