In Gustaf Lundberg’s portrait of Fredrik Axel von Fersen only the breastplate and the insignia of the Order of the Sword in the buttonhole reveal that the subject is a high-ranking officer. He had just left service as a French major-general with his own regiment. The artist renders his complexion by applying various shades side by side. Highlights and reflections are distinct, while the blue coat has a pastose and opaque character.
