The edition of Frithiof’s saga from 1888 with illustrations by August Malmström represents the breakthrough period for book illustrations during the second half of the 1880s. The artist had illustrated the same text 12 years earlier, but then his images had been reproduced using the earlier woodcut technique. In the edition from 1888 it is emphasised that in addition to the woodcuts it contains new plates of Malmström’s oil paintings reproduced using heliography.
