BiographyBalthasar van den Bossche, a pupil of Gerard
Thomas in Antwerp, was a painter of portrait groups,
conversation pieces and artists’ studios. He became a
master in the Antwerp guild of painters in 1697 and is
reported to have worked in Paris, Nantes and Douai
as well as having served as director of the Antwerp
Academy. He is said to have prospered despite being a
second rate artist. He died in 1715 from striking his
head on a window frame while instructing his pupils.
