BiographyCornelis schut i i mainly painted portraits and
religious motifs. He was the son of Pieter Schut and
the pupil of the painter Cornelis I Schut. During the
period 1624–1627 he was staying in Rome. He spent
his artistic career in Seville in particular where he settled
in 1653 and became a master in the following
year. In 1660 he was one of the founders of the Academy
of Art in Seville and responsible for it between
1670 and 1674. He was for a time a follower of Murillo
and his paintings have therefore not infrequently
been erroneously attributed to painters from Spain.
