BiographyPieter van Bloemen was a versatile painter of
genre pictures, portraits, landscapes, Roman ruins,
battles and cattle. Pieter van Bloemen’s teacher was
the battle painter Simon van Douw. In 1673/1674
Van Bloemen became a master and a member of
Antwerp’s Guild of St. Luke. He lived and worked in
Rome from 1685 to 1692, where he attracted wealthy
patrons among the visitors to the city. Like his brother
Jan Frans van Bloemen he became a member of the
Bentvueghels and in their circles he was known as
“Standard” or “Standardo”. In his larger compositions
he imaginatively mixes the various elements
from his repertoire as, for example, in Cattle Market
among Roman Ruins or Cavalry Camp in the Roman
Campagna, today in Dresden.
