This portrait of Oxenstierna was painted by the fullyfledged illusionist Mierevelt in Delft in 1635, when the Lord High Chancellor was negotiating a major loan from Holland to fund continued Swedish involvement in the Thirty Years War. This version of it, probably a studio work, which was bought at a sale in England, may have found its way there later through the English ambassador Bulstrode Whitelocke.
