This is one of the three oldest “sultan trees”, tables of Ottoman rulers from Osman I to the time the works were created. These paintings combine two pictorial traditions – images of sultans set in medallions in Ottoman manuscripts, and family trees represented as real trees in Western art. The genre was created under Abdülhamid I, a contemporary of Gustav III. One hypothesis is that Mouradgea d’Ohsson, an Armenian-Ottoman diplomat in Swedish service, had a hand in the genesis of this work.
