In this 1782 portrait of her nearly two-year-old daughter, Vigée-Lebrun displays her eminent ability in pastels to hastily depict a young child who probably found it difficult to sit still. The artist has captured Louise Lebrun’s large lively eyes and beautiful brown hair, which gave her the nickname Brunette. Thanks to the intervention of Queen Marie-Antoinette in 1783, the artist was admitted to France’s Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture.
